The NHS Plan set out the target for September 2001 of making high quality NHS dentistry available to all who want it. NHS Direct will help direct patients to NHS dentistry. PCTs should have standards for provision of dentistry, in place and agreed with local stakeholders (detail as set out in NatPaCT competences framework). Close working with NHS Direct and local dentists will have been required to achieve the 2001 target and will need to have been maintained. From April 2005, PCTs will be responsible for securing all dental services in their area.
